The 2011 Collins Artworks Summer Art Camp offers 7 exciting, fun and educational weeks of theme-based art instruction for kids of all ages. For more information, or to register, call us or stop in at the gallery.
Week 1, July 11 through July 15, 2011: Artistic Time Travel/ Mythical Creatures
Travel back in time to different countries when mythical stories and creatures were the norm. Discover The Dragon of China, Loch Ness Monster of Scotland etc.. Invent new creatures.....Learn about the methods used by ancient artists, and the beliefs that inspired them. Students will discover ancient art forms and customs and will apply what they learn to making art like the artists of ancient Scotland, Egypt, Australia, America, China, and more.
Week 2, July 18 through July 22, 2011: Kitchen Sink
Create works of art using different things found in your home. Bring your toilet paper rolls, tissue paper, wire, twisties, boxes, old mirrors, newspaper, buttons etc. Students will use recycled materials to make new works of 3D sculptor. Students will study the work of other sculptors and use what they learn to create works of art using similar methods and techniques.
Week 3, July 25 through July 29, 2011: Harry Potter's Fantasy Art Class
Come each day and enter into the magic of fantasy art. The students will be entering their first year at Hogwart's and will be taking their first magical art class. They will be using all types of materials to create their own fantasy, magical creatures. The art of fantasy art will be explored.
Week 4, August 1 through August 5, 2011: Pirates and Ships
Explore the art of the Caribbean and create your own fantasy ships, island and pirates. The kids will learn basic color theory by looking at images of paintings by famous island artists.
Week 5, August 8 through August 12, 2011: Transformers- Art
Students will enter the world of the transformers. Be careful put your seat belts on! Be ready to transform your paper and clay into 2 bodied creations. Is it a sports car or robot? Is it a phone or a ___? The students will take their own pictures with their camera at home of every day objects and print them out on regular paper (2 objects) and bring them in for a collage project. Artists will be studied that use "transforming techniques." Students will study the work of these artists and use what they learn to create works of art using similar methods and techniques.
Week 6, August 15 through August 19, 2011: Movie Making
You are an artist at a movie studio, hired to make a clay animation movie. The students will write a story using a story board, create clay models to animate the story, video each frame, finally combining the frames into a movie clip. The students will practice writing and drawing skills to create the story and models while learning the basic principles of animation.
Week 7, August 22 through August 26, 2011: Cartooning
This is the beginner’s cartooning class. The basic fundamentals of cartooning will be taught. Kid's of all ages are invited.

Additional Information
The children will use several methods and media to produce their works of art such as watercolor, tempera, oil pastels, craypas, colored pencils, watercolor crayons, markers, clay, batik, model magic, foam core, crayons, handmade textured papers, tiles, old mirrors, recycled materials, photos etc. While having fun, the kids will learn basic art theory - line, positive/negative space, composition, and color.
Each lesson is taught according to the developmental level of each child. A registered nurse will be available during each camp week. (The nurse is not present some afternoons but is available by phone.) We have a trained staff in art education, CPR and first aid. If your child has a special health care need please speak to the program director.
Summer Kids Art Camp Schedule
9 AM - 11:15 AM Structured Art project
11:15 AM- 11:30 AM- Snack time for the AM group and Lunch time for the full day students
11:30- 12 Noon- Recess. Students go to the playground or other inside activity. If you don't want your child out to play, please speak to the program director. Remember the sunscreen!
12 Noon- Morning Students leave
12 Noon to 1 PM- free time art activity and or video related to the theme (20 minutes) and or recess outside
1 PM- 4 PM- Structured Art project, recess and snack time
4 PM- Students leave
Tuition:Half day (9 AM to noon): $85; Full day (9 AM to 4 PM): $150. A discount is given to families registering more than 1 child for the full day weekly program. There is no discount for the half day program and or if registering late for a session. Please see sidebar refund policy for withdrawing before camp week.
